blu inc asked us to assist in the design and build of this project. We provided a rock-solid platform for the ever-changing needs of this international alliance, with a customisable, adaptable and easy-to-use backend.

Design
Building on a strong in-house design style, we created a site that supplements and extends the GABV’s graphic presence.

Information design
Article36 came to us wanting a website that would display material across a range of (ever-changing) topics and sub issues with clarity and elegance. Such an information-rich, regularly-updated site needed some structure, and we worked closely with Article36 staff, often at long-distance, to achieve both an underlying system and visual aesthetic that would hold up under adaptation and heavy use.

Background: check
The faint background grid was initially only intended as a design aide as we structured page elements, but was retained in the final designs and is now very much part of the character of the site.

From Scratch

After revamping their site at the beginning of last year, we were asked to do a total redesign and restructuring – more a tearing-down and building back up.

Responsive
This time around, we wanted the site to work responsively, viewable from any device and platform. We also focused on reducing elements and copy as much as possible, retaining just the bare minimum, an approach also taken with our print promotion work with SPS. There is no traditional menu on the new site – just a series of navigational boxes that rotate as you move through the site.

We’ve added online booking for courses and an integrated shop. The link between our print design for Spike Print Studio and the website has also been refreshed and reinforced.

Stand out
Structurally, the site is fairly straightforward – built upon a system of nested pages. But we developed a bold visual presence from an extant branding guide that really helps Zebra stand out from other social enterprises.

We were asked to design and build a site that would make their array of resources available quickly and deliver their message with clarity. Many of INEW’s readers view the site on the move, so we built a mobile version that is seamlessly served to mobiles.

You are Born to Learn

Born to Learn is a series of animations that we have been working on with The 21st Century Learning Initiative. We provided art direction for the animations that were narrated by Damian Lewis. We were also asked to build a website that would represent the ideas of the campaign, and be a place for interested parties to connect through.

The site’s prime responsibility is clarity: the contained ideas need space for consideration. The Initiative’s main site, also a Chesapeake production, is denser and more academic. We knew that in order to gain as wide an audience as possible, this site would need to be more concise and friendly.

Typography
Born to Learn, like the majority of our projects, is typographically-led. Proxima Nova, by Mark Simonson, was chosen for straddling the line between formal and casual. In its standard and condensed versions it serves every purpose we threw at it.

Every detail of the site was considered, from the styling of blockquotes, to text citation, to icons and integration of social networks. We’re proud as punch, can’t you tell?

A complex categorisation system is hidden with clear and generous navigation. The site features an online store, built-in search and news section. Congratulations to Absolute Press on recently becoming Bloomsbury’s specialist food imprint.
